Access Washington: K-20 Educational
Telecommunications Network

In 1996, the Washington State Legislature recognized the growing demand and
need for technology in education, and authorized the building of a $55 million
network. Today, this K-20 Educational Telecommunications Network helps educators
stretch limited resources while providing students with technology skills needed
in the workplace. One unexpected event that has come out of the development
of this network is the growing collaborative efforts between those in the K-12
arena, community and technical college instructors and 4-year university members.

The Arizona Distance Learning site is a searchable database operated by the
Arizona Board of Regents. Distance learning courses provided by the University
of Arizona (Tucson), Arizona State University (Tempe) and Northern Arizona University

In May 1991, the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville) received an NSF award
to create the state's academic and research computer network called ARKnet.
Nineteen state colleges and universities were initially provided Internet access
through the grant, and now this non-profit organization has grown to include
approximately 70 member institutions.

university." It was created by the Government of Alberta in 1970, and it
currently serves more than 22,000 students per year.
Australian Correspondence Schools

boasts over 3000 students from Australia and around the world. ACS is accredited
by the International Accreditation and Recognition Council (IARC) and has offices

Increase access to adult basic learning services and lay the groundwork for
the infrastructure to accomplish this objective was the initial goal of the
California Distance Learning Project. The California Department of Education's
Adult Education Office sponsored the project, and it was managed by the California
State University System. Subcontracting and management of the Web site was handled
by the Sacramento County Office of Education's Outreach & Technical Assistance
Network (OTAN).

by the American Productivity and Quality Center (APQC) and the State Higher

distance education program. Asynchronous online courses as well as traditional

in the spring of 1998 when 6 western Kansas community college presidents met

up Michigan's workforce. The Michigan Automotive College, established in 1996

the University of Michigan, was the model for MVU.
Minnesota Virtual University (mnVu)

MOREnet, the Missouri Research & Education Network, was established in 1991
and is part of the University of Missouri System. The purpose of MOREnet is

It is not a private ISP and does not provide services on an individual basis.
National Technological University

NTU was founded in 1984 and was considered to be the first accredited "virtual"
university. Over 50 U. S. institutions provide courses to this consortium, and

learning. One of the outgrowths of NJVU is the New Jersey Virtual

New Mexico Technet

Technet, a non-profit corporation, was founded in 1984, and their mission is
to "promote economic growth and support education through the innovative
use of technology based applications, provided by New Mexico Technet or through
joint venture initiatives". The goal of Technet was to connect and link

with a high capacity fiber optic network. In 1985, the National Science Foundation

Node, an independent, non-profit organization, was established in 1996 as the
Network for Ontario Distance Educator, and quickly discovered that they were
attracting a much larger audience than originally anticipated. In response to
the demand, the organization developed a resource "to support an international
community of educators and trainers interested in understanding online learning
technologies and harnessing their potential". Services offered to clients
include strategic planning for learning technologies, course program evaluation
and research & consulting in all aspects of online, blended and distance

North Carolina Research and Education

the North Carolina General Assembly. The network is designed to connect universities,
research institutions, and medical & graduate schools in North Carolina,

Northern Virginia Community College

Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and is operated in cooperation with

Walden was founded in 1970 by Rita and Bernard Turner, two teachers from New

Degree Programs, a division of Extended University Services (EUS). They deliver
courses and programs via the Internet and video to students throughout North
America and in 15 countries worldwide. The bachelor's degree program is designed
for students who have completed the first two years of college, and it allows
these students to finish their degree without coming to campus. Graduate, professional
and certificate programs are also offered.
Western Governors University (WGU)

WGU is the only online competency-based degree granting institution in the U.
S. Degrees and certificates from WGU are based on a student's ability to demonstrate
skills and knowledge on a series of assessments not on required courses. Delivery
of WGU materials is available through a variety of formats including the Internet
and the Postal Service. The Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education
and Training Council (DETC) granted accreditation status to WGU on June 6, 2001.
On Tuesday, February, 25, 2003, Western Governors University received accreditation at the associate, baccalaureate and master's degree levels from four regional accreditation bodies that formed to evaluate the program. help members expand and explore new distance education opportunities and innovations.
In 1989, WiscNet was founded by 24 charter members including the University
of Wisconsin institutions along with 8 private colleges and universities. The
network began operations in 1991 with the help from an NSF grant, and they now
have over 475 members.
World Lecture Hall (WLH)

courses. Courses, most of which are offered via the Web by accredited colleges
