The Distance Education Clearinghouse is an often cited, mega distance education site that was launched in 1995. It is a service provided by Instructional Communication Systems, University of Wisconsin Extension, and it covers Wisconsin, national and international distance education issues. New materials are added to the site on a regular basis.

Distance Education Systemwide Interactive Electronic Newsletter (DESIEN), a publication produced by the University of Wisconsin Extension can be found at http://www.uwex.edu/disted/desien/2001/0103/focus.htm.
This searchable newsletter is produced by the University of Wisconsin Extension and is distributed to subscribers on the last business day of each month via e-mail. The current issue of DESIEN plus archived copies dating back to 1995 can be accessed at this site.

Models of Distance Education

The University of Maryland University College developed this "conceptual planning tool" for the University System of Maryland Institute for Distance Education (IDE). Three different distance education models are presented, including: 1) distributed classroom; 2) independent learning; and 3) open learning + class. These models are not an exhaustive list of distance education scenarios but are designed to be food-for-thought to administrators and educators who are attempting to best serve off-campus students.

National Center for Online Learning Research (NCOLR)

The mission of NCOLR is to "construct, study, and disseminate guidelines for the development and evaluation of online learning environments". Those involved in this project include the University of Idaho, IMITS (Institute for Mathematics, Interactive Technologies, and Science), the University of Alabama, NOVA/NASA University Network, and First Step Research, with funding from the United States Department of Education in the FIPSE Learning Anytime Anywhere Partnerships Program. PBS Adult Learning Service (ALS)

ALS is the "largest source of telecourses in the world", and their catalog currently lists over 100 telecourses available for use. More than 25 of these telecourses also include a Web-based component. ALS licenses educational program rights to colleges, universities and other institutions, and these programs can be used as:

  1. the basis for distance education courses;
  2. enrichment to traditional classes; and
  3. professional development events.

Peterson's has been involved in connecting individuals to educational resources since 1996 and is part of the Lifelong Learning group within Thomson Learning (Thomson Corporation). This education portal allows visitors to search for colleges, graduate programs and financial aid opportunities. Information and practice tests for exams such as the ACT, GRE, MCAT and TOEFL are also available.

UMUC-Verizon Virtual Resource Site for Teaching with Technology

This award-winning site, developed as the result of joint efforts between the Center for the Virtual University and the Center for Teaching & Learning, both in the Office of Distance Education & Lifelong Learning at the University of Maryland University College (UMUC). The first model addresses the selection and use of Web-based media to enhance the student learning experience. In module two, the focus is on the delivery of online courses.
